(Ecofin Agency) - The Niger Delta Avengers have resumed attacks on oil installations, claiming responsibility for five new attacks in southern Delta since Friday.Up until now, the group made any attacks in the Niger Delta since June 16.
According to the group, a pipeline connected to the Warri refinery operated by NNPC was attacked on Friday night. On Saturday night, two lines close to Batan flow station in Delta state run by NPDC, a subsidiary of NNPC, were blown while two Chevron facilities close to Abiteye flow station, in Delta state, came under attack in the early hours of Sunday.Sources from the Ministry of Petroleum in late June disclosed that a truce had been agreed with the militants, but the Avengers said they did not recall approving a ceasefire.
Attacks by militants in the Niger Delta region have made Nigeria’s crude production drop to a 30-year lows, even though the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) had said that output was increasing as a result of renovations and a cease in attacks.
The militants have said that they want a larger share of Nigeria's oil wealth, which accounts for about 70% of national income, to be given to the communities in the region and for areas ruined by oil spills to be cleaned, Reuters reports.
