(Ecofin Agency) - Denis Sassou N'guesso, President of the Republic of Congo, began an official visit to Russia on June 25, 2024. This visit focuses on vital areas of cooperation, according to the Congolese presidency.
Early in his visit, Sassou N'guesso met with the CEO of Rosatom, the Russian nuclear energy firm. While details of the meeting were not disclosed, Russia has shown strong interest in developing nuclear energy in Congo-Brazzaville for several years. Since 2022, the two nations have discussed this topic. Last year, Sassou N'guesso met with Rosatom executives to discuss building several micro-nuclear plants to boost Congo's energy supply.
In the energy sector, Sassou N'guesso also held meetings with officials from oil companies, including Lukoil and Zarubezhneft. As an oil-producing country, Congo seeks to better exploit its resources and partner with global industry players to enhance productivity and strengthen infrastructure.
"We believe Lukoil will secure permits in Congo and become an operator in oil concessions. The same applies to the gas sector," Sassou N'guesso revealed.
The president also had discussions with representatives from Rosoboron, a company specializing in defense equipment sales. These talks come as Moscow aims to present itself as a credible military cooperation partner for African countries looking to diversify beyond traditional allies like France or the United States.
Moscow and Brazzaville have a relationship spanning 60 years, but their trade exchanges remain low. In 2022, trade between the two countries amounted to only $9.1 million, down from $173 million in 2021, according to the International Trade Center (ITC). The trade balance heavily favors Moscow, with cereals, particularly wheat, being the main products exchanged.
