(Ecofin Agency) - Lucara Diamond Corp, triply listed Canadian diamond producer, has recovered from its Karowe mine (100% interests) in Botswana, a 1,111 carat gem quality, Type IIa diamond classified as the “second largest diamond ever recovered”.
The magnificent stone was found in the Southern lobe of the Karowe mine and is the first diamond to be recovered through a modern processing facility, the Large Diamond Recovery (LDR) XRT, the British Columbian firm said on November 18.
Measuring 65mm x 56mm x 40mm, the stone is “the largest ever to have been recovered” in Botswana, a country well-known for its exceptional diamonds.
Let us be reminded that the world’s largest diamond is 3,106 carat and was discovered in 1905 in the Cullinan mine which is at the foot of the Magaliesberg Mountain in South Africa.
According to Petra Diamonds, British diamond producer who has Cullinan as one of its assets, the two largest stones of the British royal crown were carved from this fabulous diamond. Its other mines in Africa include: Finsch, Koffiefontein, Kimberley Underground, Williamson and Helam.
