(Ecofin Agency) - The Burkinabe transition government announced, on 25th September, the dissolution of the Presidential Security Regiment (RSP), which had executed the coup d’état of 17th September. This decision was taken during the cabinet meeting following the putsch.
The political parties and civil societies insisted on the dissolution of RSP since the fall of Blaise Compaoré in October 2014. But the transition authorities did not have the courage to act and break up this force described as “an army within the army” by the Reconciliation and Reforms Commission set up after the fall of Mr. Compaoré.
Elite unit strong of 1,300 men, RSP was the Praetorian guard of the ex-president who was ousted by street demonstrations after 27 years of power. The cabinet meeting also dismissed Sidi Paré, Deputy Security Minister and his Chief of Staff, who both allied themselves to the putschists.
Moreover, the cabinet meeting also decided the creation of a commission of enquiry on the coup d’état, with the aim of “placing the responsibilities” in order to prosecute the authors and accomplices of this overthrow.
The public prosecutor of Burkina Faso has on the other hand announced on 26th September, freezing the assets of General Gilbert Diendéré (photo) and 13 others people suspected of having played a role in the fail coup.
