(Ecofin Agency) - Burkina’s military Justice just issued an international arrest warrant against former president Blaise Compaoré regarding his involvement in the murder of his predecessor Thomas Sanjara (photo). “I confirm that an international arrest warrant has been issued against former president Blaise Compaoré by the investigating judge,” Prosper Farama, lawyer of the Sankara family, told Reuters.
Revolutionary and former president of Burkina Faso, Thomas Sankara was murdered in 1987 during a coup which put Blaise Compaoré in power.
The emblematic Thomas Sankara case was reopened last March ending, about five months after the popular revolt that led to the demise of Blaise Compaoré who reigned for 27 years. The presumed body of the former head of state was hence exhumed May ending in order to determine the circumstances of his death. However, following analysis conducted in France, the remains revealed no signs of the DNA of Burkina’s former president.
After fleeing last October 2014, Mr. Compaoré has been staying in Côte d’Ivoire. Other collaborators of Sankara’s former brother in arms like General Gilbert Diendéré, former right hand of Compaoré and the man behind last September’s failed putsch, have already been arrested for “murder”, “corpse concealment” and “terrorist attack”.
