(Ecofin Agency) - In the past week end, Islamists have fired rockets at BP’s gas processing unit located in Krechba, Algeria.
Authorities from the Algerian government and BP said nobody died in the attack and no significant material damage was accounted for.
Sources close to the case said the attackers fired the rockets from a car outside the unit’s perimeter. Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) claimed responsibility for the attack.
According to a union officer from Sonatrach, security agents were deployed by Algerian authorities to boost security at the plant.
In January 2013, an Islamist commando attacked the In Amenas gas plant. 40 people died during the attack. After the attack, various foreign companies threatened to leave the country if the security situation was not solved. With the new attack, the issue of security at gas plants in this Algerian region resurfaces.
