(Ecofin Agency) - Burkina Faso’s National Anti-Corruption Network (Renlac) published July 19, a report on the level of corruption in the country. According to the document, public administration recorded overall a higher level of corruption compared to 2016.
The top 3 most corrupt sectors include, respectively, the municipal police, customs, and land and maritime transport. This increase in corruption reflects the weakness of government action to address the issue.
“Despite the speech on the zero tolerance to fraud policy, concrete results of the virtuous governance promoted by President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré are yet to be perceived,” said Dr Claude Wetta, one of the report’s authors, according to comments relayed by Xinhua.
The report points out that 23.9% of respondents said they had offered a benefit directly to a public official in return for non-payable services in 2017, compared with 16.6% in 2016.
