(Ecofin Agency) - During the council of ministers organized on October 12, 2016, the government of Benin has decided to aggressively tackle the land management issue. It will develop a complete, modern and reliable national land register.
“Land insecurity is a major issue in our nation. Many reforms have been initiated to boost land tenure. However, modern and performing management tools for land management are lacking. This is why the government decided to develop the nation cadastre for which works will commence in 2017 with assistance of defined partners. In the long run, Benin will have all tools necessary to identify, register and describe lands. Cartography of the territory will be done, reliable and perennial, on a communal basis, and based on the land plots divisions,” said the statement published by the government for this purpose.
The move comes with precautionary measures such as council’s decision to suspend “all ongoing operations regarding the elaboration of cadastral documents”, and especially operations for allotment and provision of land titles.
