(Ecofin Agency) - The draft bill on inheritance and bequests, a reform ensuring that women have the same inheritance rights as men, still divides the Tunisian public's opinion.
Despite the upheaval, this draft bill was publicly supported by the country’s president Béji Caïd Essebsi. “I suggest we make equality in inheritance a law”, he said while stressing that as a conciliatory gesture, the testator will have the possibility to “either implement the constitution or choose to be free in his inheritance’s distribution”, BBC reports.
Let’s remind that the Tunisian legislation entitles a woman the right to only half of the inheritance a man with the same degree of kinship is entitled to.
