(Ecofin Agency) - The Nigerian House of Representatives have revealed plans to debate a motion seeking safety for outgoing President of Gambia, Yahya Jammeh (photo), in Nigeria where it could be guaranteed. A lawmaker from Jigawa State, Sani Zoro, had moved the motion under matters of urgent public importance.
According to Zoro, the motion is part of measures to solve the crisis in the country. He said Jammeh can come to Nigeria to rest and live, if he accepts to surrender power to the new President. The session was presided over by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, who said the motion would be debated on the next legislative day, which is today, in line with House Rules, This Day reports.
Gambia’s outgoing President, Yahya Jammeh, had lost the December 1, 2016 election to Adama Barrow but has sworn not to hand over power and concede defeat, claiming there were errors in the results and had opted to contest the outcome in court. This had caused tensions in the country.
However, leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), headed by President Muhammadu Buhari, have been exploring ways to ensure a peaceful transition of power.
