RDC: AMCC launches new corn flour with the ambition of satisfying for Katanga needs

Tuesday, 21 July 2015 09:16

Bukari ya Kwetu” is the name of the new premium quality corn flour in the ex-province of Katanga (Democratic Republic of Congo) by the African Milling Company Congo (AMCC).

The biggest miller of Central Africa declared that this product will enable to stop corn flour imports in the province.

For Barthélémy Mumba Gama, who heads the agriculture department of Katanga, this flour could become the agricultural equivalent of copper, of which the ex-province is one of the main producers in Africa. According to the APA, the initiative will also stimulate the production of corn in a region which is a big consumer of the cereal.

Katanga has an annual requirement of 18,000 metric tons against a production of 9,600 metric tons, hence a deficit of 8,400 metric tons provided for by import coming from Zambia. It is worth noting that the launch of this flour comes at a time when Southern Africa has seen its production of corn decreasing this year.
