(Ecofin Agency) - In 2018, Tunisia’s agriculture should grow by about 10.9%, against 2.5% only this year. This was announced by the minister of agriculture, water resources and fishery, Samir Taieb (photo), on the sidelines of the information day on agricultural investment in Tunisia, organized by the Consulate general of Tunisia in France.
The improvement should result in higher agricultural export revenues. According to Taieb, these, which come mainly from citruses, olive oil and dates, are expected to, for the first time ever, exceed tourism revenues.
Agriculture which contributes to about 10% of the country’s GDP, employs more than 16% of its active population. It generates 10% of export revenues and has a huge potential for development as the nation has around five million hectares of available arable lands.
