(Ecofin Agency) - In South Africa, the avocado output could record a new performance in 2018. Indeed, according to latest data from the South African Avocado Growers’ Association (SAAGA), the fruit output is set to increase to 125, 000 tons in 2018, from 117, 000 tons in 2017 (+8, 000 tons) thanks to growing local and international demand. This figure remains above the five-year average (118, 000 tons) in the country.
According to Derek Donkin, the association’s executive director, South Africa will export half of the expected volume while 40% will be locally consumed. The balance will be turned into guacamole and avocado oil.
Currently, the fruit is grown on 17, 000 ha mainly in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces. The latter provide about 90% of the national yield. In South Africa, the avocado sector provides almost 8, 200 permanent jobs and 7, 300 seasonal works.
Let’s note that the country is the fifth largest avocado producer in the southern hemisphere after Peru, Chile, Brazil, and Venezuela.
