(Ecofin Agency) - Senegalese region Fatick achieved the best performance for millet and groundnut production during the 2017-18 campaign. Indeed, while its millet total output reached 189, 690 tons, groundnut peaked at 230, 104 tons.
These statistics announced by Mamadou Badiane, regional director of rural development (DRDR), make the area the nation’s first in these crops production.
According to the official, this strong performance is owing to good weather marked by wintering good progress and well distribution of rainfall.
“The State has made efforts to subsidize agricultural inputs and equipment, within the framework of strengthening training, water control, support and advice, and in terms of anticipation to provide the sector’s actors with good work conditions,” he said.
Senegalese authorities indicate that agriculture employs nearly 90% of the Fatick region’s active population. Agriculture activities occupy more than 280 000 hectares.
