(Ecofin Agency) - Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko said on Saturday that, as part of efforts to improve food security, the government was looking at possibilities to give agricultural lands to white farmers.
“Farmers who have managed to co-exist with adjacent communal and resettled farmers” might benefit from this, the VP told the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC). These farmers, still according to the official, will be getting offer letters from the government.
As surprising as the government’s decision may appear, it is not without cause. Indeed, Zimbabwe currently experiences a global and severe food crisis. This situation mainly results from the land reform implemented in 2000 which caused white farmers to lose their lands to the benefit of black farmers. However now, the government believes its plan has failed.
By going backward, Harara wishes most of all to maximize potentialities so as to insure sustainable food security through a higher agricultural production.
