(Ecofin Agency) - In Madagascar, there is growing anger among the litchi producers. They are outraged by prices used by some collectors which are out of sync with the prices observed on the local market. These prices, which have not moved for some years, prevent producers from investing in quality, their representatives explained to L’Express de Madagascar.
“It has been three years now where the prices of litchis have remained the same. We use all our efforts to respect the quality and the norms requested by the collectors but the price always remains the same. One kilo of litchis for export is sold at 1,000 ariary” (€0.28) Rado Randriantsara, president of the Antoka association of litchi producers, located in Toamasina declared.
Exporters are closely following this situation, indicating that negotiations are currently ongoing between producers and intermediaries to set fair prices for both parties.
Madagascar exports approximately 17,000 tons of litchis on a yearly basis.
