(Ecofin Agency) - Senegal and Mauritania officially signed a fisheries protocol previously agreed at the end of March this year. This was during the 31st summit of the African Union (AU) held in the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott.
Under the agreement, Senegalese fishers are allowed to catch 50,000 tons of small pelagic fish per year and use a maximum of 400 boats. In return, they will pay €10 euros per ton to cover fees for tonnage control processes.
“Mauritania targets a sustainable management system, and it is therefore crucial for us to regulate fisheries so that we do not capture more than we must,” the Mauritanian fisheries minister Nani Ould Chrougha told RFI.
Let’s note that Mauritania has an Exclusive Economic Zone (ZEE) covering nearly 234,000 km², the international NGO Greenpeace said.
