(Ecofin Agency) - Burundi Coffee Farmers’ Confederation (CNAC) forecasts a 17,000 tons coffee output for the 2018 season, reflecting an increase by 2,000 tons compared to last year. According to information relayed by Bloomberg, this increase is owing to good rainfall and higher use of fertilizers.
Joseph Ntirabampa, CNAC’s head, said that, during the season which began in March, growers will earn between 500 and 600 francs per kilogram of coffee cherry supplied to washing stations.
Back in 2017, the country shipped 10,000 tons of coffee for about 52 billion francs of revenues. Let’s recall that in Burundi, where the Arabica variety is the most grown, coffee sub-sector employs about 600,000 rural households.
