Ghana: Government to put a stop to job cuts by oil firms

Friday, 12 February 2016 11:35

(Ecofin Agency) - The Ghanaian Government has vowed to work towards ensuring that the dismissals by oil firms in the country which is caused by the drop in crude oil prices does not affect Ghanaian workers unjustifiably.

According to the Petroleum Minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, although government acknowledges that these job reductions are required, caution should also be an important factor.

What we have done though is that we’ve put our feet on the ground, we’ve fought with the oil companies and we have made it clear that in this young industry when we are building capacity, this is not where you cut and cut. We need to make sure that critical areas we protect,” the Petroleum Minister told Ghana Web.

Buah said he is confident that oil exploration activities will not be affected in the country despite declining crude prices. He added that all the oil companies have safeguarded the necessary funding for their operations.
