Zimbabwe’s largest coal producer, Makomo Resources, was ordered 15,000 metric tons of a variety of the fuel by Europe.
Finance director, Tenai Mungoni, said the coal will be shipped next month, without naming its final destination saying it was confidential, Bloomberg said. The coal will pass through the Beira port in Mozambique. However, the company is still negotiating with its authorities to this end.
“The inquiries we’ve had are as a result of the recovery in coal prices internationally and to date, we’ve had two firm orders from Europe,” Mr Mungoni said.
Let’s recall that last October, the firm got from the government of Zimbabwe the construction license for the Hwange coal-fired plant. The 660 MW infrastructure will consist of two 330 MW units, and help reduce national power deficit.
Makomo Resources produces 160,000 tons of coal each month, which it sells mostly to Zimbabwe Power Co, Zambian Breweries and traders in DR Congo. It aims to increase this output to 300,000 tons.
