(Ecofin Agency) - Congolese business mogul Moise Katumbi was condemned to a 3-year prison sentence for his involvement in a case of property spoliation, in Lubumbashi. Due to this judgment, President Kabila’s main rival, is no more eligible to take part in the coming presidential elections.
Accused and prosecuted for prejudice to State security and recruiting American mercenaries, Mr. Katumbi has finally been condemned for spoliation. In detail, a Greek national named Alexander Stoupis sued the President’s opponent for using a forged contract to illegally acquire, at the beginning of 2000s, a building that previously belonged to his mother. Katumbi’s defense claimed that the building belonged to his brother since 1976.
Presently receiving medical treatment in London, Katumbi was not at the hearing. He was thus convicted in absentia (by default). His lawyers denounced the court’s partiality in the case.
Katumbi’s senior brother, Raphael Katebe Katoto who is also sued denounced “desprocesbidons” and affirmed to be the rightful owner of the building involved.
