(Ecofin Agency) - In Morocco, the Haute Autorité de la Communication Audiovisuelle (HACA) announced that it would not press charges against television channel 2M following the broadcast of the concert of American artist Jennifer Lopez, on 29 May during the opening of the Mawazine festival.
HACA thus replied to the letter sent by the head of government, Abdelilah Benkirane, who asked for sanctions against the public television channel. In its correspondence, the government’s chief denounced the “sexually charged scenes, against the decency, moral and religious values of Moroccan society and upsetting to the viewers”.
The Jennifer Lopez concert has been widely criticised in Morocco. The diva is accused of having been scantily clad throughout the show. The Party Justice and Development (PJD) particularly castigated the fact that the quasi-naked singer would “dance in an erotically suggestive manner on the public television”. The minister of Communication, who is affiliated to the PJD, also declared “unacceptable” the broadcast of the concert on television. A complaint was lodged against Jennifer Lopez for “disturbing the public order and sullying women’s honour”.
