(Ecofin Agency) - The Togolese government has decided to release 42 people, arrested, judged and condemned by various courts during the recent protests that occurred in the country. It also ordered the restitution of bikes ceased in Lomé during the Sept 7 protest and also the lifting of the supervision measure targeting opposition leader, Jean Pierre Fabre.
Measures will also be taken to start talks, in the capital city, with all actors of the country’s political environment. The government hopes that all these measures will cause “political actors to exercise restraints and instill in them a sense of responsibility that will help preserve peace and unity in the country”.
In the past months, Togo has recorded a series of protests led by the opposition which demands the return of the 1992 constitution, after the government initiated a constitutional reforms process that should result to a referendum.
In a statement published on November 6, the government recalled the measures taken following the exchange meetings held last October 30 and 31, with all national political actors. These include: the establishment of an internal service of order by opposition leaders; a body that is to cooperate tightly with the forces of order. There is also the presence of human rights defense organizations to determine eventual cases of violence and abuse.
