(Ecofin Agency) - In Ghana, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) said it expected its National Fertilizer Subsidy Programme to benefit one million small farmers. According to Business & Financial Times which reported the information, this will be done through the “E-subsidy Management for Fertilizer” platform.
The government of Ghana has decided to resort to this solution after experimenting multiple systems of fertilizer distribution for eight years. The results of these experiments are mitigated due to contraband, illegal stocking of fertilizers by retailers, or massive purchase of commercial exploitations to the detriment of small producers.
Government, after investing 120 million Cedis to subsidize 180,000 tons of fertilizers, set quotas. Each farmer registered under the programme can buy up to 15 bags of fertilizers. These can be used to cultivate up to 5 hectares. However, a MoFa official indicates that most small farmers exploit between 2 to 5 hectares. Therefore, those willing to get more fertilizers will have to pay them at market price.
E. Asante-Krobea, head of the MoFa’s cultivation service told B&FT that the National Fertilizer Subsidy programme is one of many which the ministry launched to boost national production. Truly, this year, 4,000 tons of certified rice seeds are to be distributed to farmers to help Ghana become self-sufficient in terms of rice production.
