(Ecofin Agency) - For the 2018 season, Egypt’s table grapes’ export volume is set to stand at 100,000 tons, Ahmed Hodaiby, head of Giza-based Trade Waves reports.
According to information relayed by FreshFruitPortal, the campaign kicked off last May 8, two weeks earlier than usual as the warm weather started earlier.
The manager pointed out that on the European market, prices are rather acceptable for white grapes but are more challenging for red grapes due to higher supply from Chile and South Africa.
Let’s recall that earlier this year, China and Egypt signed an export protocol enabling the latter to access the Chinese market. However, many challenges are yet to be addressed to take full advantage of this agreement.
“The Chinese grapes are quite cheap, so unless Egypt offers something extraordinary it will be very difficult to compete with the Chinese production,” he said.
