(Ecofin Agency) - Fishery was in 2015, Senegal’s main source of export, revealed Oumar Guèye, Senegal’s Minister of Fishery and Maritime Economy. “In 2015, fishery was our main source of export. It generated FCFA194.6 billion which equals 20.8% of export revenues and contributed to 3.2% of our GDP,” he said.
Aiming to reinforce this trend, Mr Guèye said he was focusing his efforts on his intervention policy and regulatory framework. He also mentioned the importance of fishery for Senegalese saying: “with an average of 29kg of fish consumed by a person each year, fishery plays a major role in the population‘s food and nutritional security. It satisfies more than 70% of their needs in animal proteins.”
Oumar Guèye said this during a workshop for the validation of a fishery and aquaculture sectoral policy letter. The letter aims to accelerate the implementation of current reforms in the sector and to boost their efficiency also, APA said.
