(Ecofin Agency) - In Burundi, the cotton situation is like the political situation: in a bad position. Indeed, the country has seen its production go from 9,000 tons to 2,300 tons in the space of 20years (1993-2014). At the root of this situation, the continued drop in cotton prices which accentuated the disenchantment of producers for this crop.
Pierre Claver Nahimana, who heads the Compagnie de gérance du coton (COGERCO - Cotton Management Company), thus explains that a kilogram of cotton can be bought now for 2,100 Burundian francs against 3,000 Burundian francs in 2011. Moreover, APA continues, the areas dedicated to the cotton culture are decreasing under demographic pressure.
Only positive aspect for the Burundian cotton, its quality remains intact, which facilitates the marketing of the fibre.
