(Ecofin Agency) - In 2017, Algeria produced 3.5 million tons of cereals, Reuters reported citing an official from the Ministry of Agriculture.
Though this output slightly exceeds (+3%) last year’s (3.4 million tons), it is still below the 4 million tons the country recorded in 2015 and far behind 2009’s (6.12 million tons).
Harvest this year covered 3.5 million hectares and includes hard and soft wheat, barley as well as oat. “Hard wheat represented 57% of overall production (2 million tons) for this season,” the same source indicated.
Let’s recall that Algeria’s cereals output mostly comes from the West, in the regions of Tiaret, Sidi Bel Abbès, Aïn Témouchent, and East, in the region of Tébessa. The government said it aims to, between 2015 and 2019, achieve an output of 7 million tons of cereals and have 2 million hectares of irrigated arable lands.
