(Ecofin Agency) - Malawi has recorded normal rains during the 2017/18 agricultural season, Reuters reported citing a statement from the Malawi ministry of natural resources.
Though the improvement should lead to a good production of maize, the country’s main basic food product, the ministry indicates that difficult weather conditions such as prolonged drought and flooding could occur at various places.
Let it be recalled that in 2016/17 Malawi has harvested 3.2 million tons of maize, slumping by 13.2 million tons compared to the previous season, due to El Nino-driven drought.
Just like many other Southern African nations like Zambia, Malawi highly depends on maize to meet its demand for cereals.
