(Ecofin Agency) - The European Union recently announced it was not going to revise the agreement on Moroccan tomato import. According to Europa Press, Phil Hogan, the commissioner for agriculture and rural development said: “We have no plans to revise the agreement with Morocco concerning tomatoes and other products”. He added that “the agreement needed no systematic 5-year revision”.
The announcement came in a few days after Spanish producers asked Brussels to take measures against Moroccan tomato imports which they affirm, threaten the regional market. The claims from Spain are backed by increasing production it recorded as an effect of global warming, Huffigton Post revealed.
Discarding Spain’s claim, Brussels wishes to keep its relationship with Morocco as healthy as possible. Truly, this relationship slightly degraded after the cancellation of agricultural agreements between EU and Morocco by the European High Court of Justice.
