(Ecofin Agency) - At the end of winter 2017, the Senegalese region Kaffrine recorded an increase by over 30% in groundnut output to 253,000 tons compared to the previous year. Samba Ndao Tall, head of the region’s rural development, who reported the news said that this production level met the targets set last November. It was achieved thanks to rainfall well distributed over time as well as government support. The latter includes the supply of quality seeds, mineral fertilizers and agricultural equipment to famers. “Between 2012 and 2017, Kaffrine’s peanut growers benefited from about 70,000 units of small agricultural equipment and tractors,” Mr. Tall indicated. In Senegal, Kaffrine is the region with the largest area dedicated to groundnut cultivation (200,000 ha).
