(Ecofin Agency) - In Senegal, the Seed and Cereals Treatment Centre of Koalack has just been inaugurated. According to the authorities, this infrustruction will enable treatment for 3,000 tons of seeds and will cover the needs in seeds of more than 50,000 producers of the Central regions of the country indicates APS.
The result of a public-private partnership between Kaolack Semences et Céréales (KASEC) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), this centre is the third of its kind in the country of the ones of Richard-Toll (North) and Kolda (South-East).
Si Lety Diop, Head of the Seeds section at the Rural Development Regional Office, was pleased about the reduction in production costs that will come with the establishment of this centre.
James P. Zumwalt, US ambassador in Senegal, highlighted for his part the impact the infrastructure will have on production levels. “With this new seeds and cereals treatment centre, farmers will not harvest three more per hectare”, he declared before stressing that “since the Senegalese farmers have started using quality certified seeds, quality corn and millet yields have more than doubled”.
