(Ecofin Agency) - As drought hits Morocco, its government has decided to take action. Indeed, as rain deficit for the 2015-2016 season is 63% higher than last season’s, authorities have decided to mobilize 4.5 billion dirham to overcome the crisis.
According to Medias 24, this sum will be invested in preserving livestock, protecting green resources, and sustaining balance in rural areas.
While the first goal includes the implementation of measures such as supplying barley at a fixed price of 2 dirham the kg all over the country, developing and rehabilitating boreholes, launching an additional vaccination campaign, the second for its part will focus on irrigation. Truly, the executive body will insure the irrigation of 93,000 ha normally under rain-fed conditions while gathering a significant seed stock for the next season. The last objective will allow the most remote areas of the country to have access to drinking water.
It must be highlighted that this effort of the Benkirane team will receive the support of Mamda (Mutuelle Agricole Marocaine d’Assurances) which has a compensation potential of 1.25 billion dirham.
