Nigeria Weighs Higher Power Exports to Togo, Pending Payment Guarantees

  • Nigeria considers increasing 75 MW electricity exports to Togo
  • Talks focus on meeting rising demand and recent supply disruptions
  • Expansion depends on payment guarantees and secure commercial terms

Nigeria has signaled its intention to increase electricity exports to Togo as energy demand rises across West Africa. The statement was made during talks on Thursday, March 12, between Togo's national power utility, the Compagnie Energie Electrique du Togo (CEET), and Nigeria's Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC).

The Nigerian operator, which already supplies roughly 75 MW to Togo under a bilateral agreement, is considering raising exports. If implemented, the move would support the expansion of Togo's power grid as demand from industrial and commercial users grows.

For Togo, the priority is to secure its electricity supply amid recent disruptions. Network outages in recent months have exposed the limits of current capacity, which authorities are now seeking to address.

The NDPHC, however, has made clear that any increase in exports depends on secure commercial arrangements. The company stressed the need for financial guarantees and reliable payment mechanisms to ensure the sustainability of cross-border trade.

Over the longer term, Togo will need to balance imports with expanding its domestic generation capacity to sustainably meet rising demand.
